THE NIGHT PORTER 1974 (Il Portiere di Notte)
Directed by Liliana Cavani
True love is often illegal because it knows no boundaries, and Liliana Cavani's dark and disturbing 1974 drama - about a concentration camp survivor who fatefully comes face to face with her ex-Nazi captor and lover - charts such a perverse love story. In this dark gem of a film, the mysterious Charlotte Rampling plays the Holocaust survivor Lucia, and the classically trained British actor Dirk Bogarde is piercing as the former SS officer Max.
The Night Porter brilliantly uses landscape as character, and its desaturated tones are soaked in blues and greys, evoking the ashes of the Holocaust despite the fact that the story takes place in post-war Vienna. In the film, this Austrian capital is depicted as a shady city possessed by a hushed post-World War II guilt. This haunting film, written and directed by a woman, explores the darker sides of sexuality, along with the psychological implications of S/M relationships, together with what is commonly referred to as the "Stockholm syndrome". Perversely erotic, it's an transgressive example of amour fou. Once again, only in the 70s was such a film possible.
This will be a high-definition screening.
